FAA LAKE LANIER RECREATION AREA - FALLRA
Sometime in the early 1960's">
Sometime in the early 1960's, a tract of land owned by the Corps
of Engineers on Lake Lanier was leased to the FAA for a recreation area for it's
employees. This was raw land, no facilities, no boat docks, nothing except beautiful
lakefront. With the work of volunteers only, and small membership dues, electricity
was obtained and through the years two comfort stations, a pavilion, camping sites, boat
docks, and picnic tables were added, and two wells were provided. No government
funds were used. Many names come to mind, Arvin Basnight, Ski Ladzinski, Don Reininger,
Bill Jenkins, Claude Hayes, Bill McKnight, Judy Devine, Frank Gee and many others who put
in extraordinary time and effort to develop the area. Unfortunately, a few years ago
the Corps devised a rental program and would have required a large amount of money to
continue the lease. The amount was more than a group of employees could possibly
have paid. The Corps required the removal of all improvements, and the property lies
fallow, never again used by anyone, but we remember those years of fun times, and the
people, and miss them. Here are a few pictures from those times. Claude Hayes presents a prize to a proud fisherman, and Norma Raymond Doug and
