Out and About  Civil War Naval Museum!!     (Page 3)

Port Columbus National Civil War Naval Museum

The Port Columbus National Civil War Naval Museum features two original Civil War military vessels, The CSS Jackson and the CSS Chattahoochee.  The museum also displays uniforms, equipment and weapons used by the Union and Confederate navies.

The CSS Jackson, an Ironclad, was being built in Columbus, GA., and was incomplete when the Union forces occupied Columbus in 1865 and burned all Confederate Government facilities, including the CSS Jackson.  The ship was turned loose and drifted down the river for two weeks, while burning.  It finally burned to the waterline and sank about 30 miles south of Columbus.  It remained underwater for 95 years before being recovered and returned to Columbus for public display.

The CSS Chattahoochee was a gunboat built along the Chattahoochee just north of the Florida border.  It was designed to protect the river and potentially help break the Union blockade of Apalachicola.  Following an accidental boiler explosion that killed 19 of it's crew, it was brought to the Confederate Naval Shipyard in Columbus, where it remained under repair for the rest of the war.  It was scuttled by it's own officers in March 1865 and was recovered in the early 1960's and brought back to Columbus.
